Manifesto for a Safer World

  1. It is not acceptable that children risk death or Injury twice a day on their way to and from school and that we adults let 260,000 children die and 10 million get Injured or crippled each year in road crashes;
  2. It is not acceptable that vulnerable road users (VRU) are not being provided with safe road crossing facilities and footpaths in their communities to visit public buildings, go shopping or move about in comfort and safety in their own towns;
  3. It is not acceptable that passengers (often with no choice) are being exposed to very high risks of death or injury on Public Transport buses and taxis because of inadequate controls and safety checks by the appropriate Authorities;
  4. It is not acceptable that unsafe drivers and unsafe un-roadworthy vehicles are permitted to use the road because of inadequate checking and testing;
  5. It is not acceptable that drunken drivers remain free (because of ineffective enforcement) to expose other road users to risk of death and injury;
  6. It is not acceptable that speeding drivers are allowed (because of ineffective enforcement) to expose other road users to risk and injury;
  7. It is not acceptable that Roads Authorities and Road Designers take no personal responsibility for the operational safety of the roads they design or manage;
  8. It is not acceptable that the Motorcycle Industry makes $Billions in profits each year but does very little effective work to reduce deaths and injuries amongst motorcyclists;
  9. It is not acceptable that Global Motor Vehicle Manufacturers exploit absence of vehicle safety standards to dump less safe versions in developing countries of the much safer vehicles they manufacture to sell in the EU or USA;
  10. It is not acceptable that roads ‘improved’ through rehabilitation by Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) often add to the number unsafe roads in a country.

 “It is unacceptable that 1.3 million people die and 50 million are injured or crippled every year on roads around the world”

“We must, can, and will, change this”
